Avebury

REBURIAL issue relating to the child's remains in the Avebury museum has been widely consulted according to English Heritage and National Trust and they will now remain where they are. See Honouring the Ancient Dead page on this site or follow this link for further discussions

Access difficulties to Avebury WHS Site

Whether it is disabled access which needs upgrading especially at the gate opposite the Red Lion pub, or the height restrictor on the main car park which prevents vans higher than 2.6 m entering at festival times especially - we are campaigning hard to get NT to obey their legal obligations.

CAMPING INFO AT AVEBURY

Eight years of discussion has NOT produced an official campsite and the lack of alternatives in the area are demeaning to the requirements of such a regularly visited World Heritage Site.

Info from the NT Avebury Office "There will be no camping available on the weekend before the Summer Solstice.

We would advise anybody planning to come to celebrate the solstice at Avebury to consider both finding accommodation in official campsites nearby and to visiting by public transport. The main celebrations will take place on the evening of 20 June and at Sunrise on 21 June.

The National Trust is part of the Avebury Solstice Planning Group and works closely with police, the local councils, residents, the fire brigade and other safety groups to ensure that this is a peaceful and safe event for those who wish to celebrate the solstice here.

Camper Vans and Mobile Homes

Outside the Summer Solstice, you are welcome to park your camper van in the main car park during the day, but we unfortunately cannot allow you to park overnight in our main car park.

This has been a condition of the Enforcement Notice of Kennet District Council since it was imposed on January 1, 2007. Please help us to comply with local regulations by noting the closing times of the car park. Breaching these conditions can cause a nuisance to local residents and we may have to remove your vehicle from the car park.

While we do not provide anywhere for camping in vehicles overnight, for your convenience the following links may help you source available accommodation locally:

■Postern Hill Caravan and Camping Site, near Savernake Forest 0845 130 8224 or 01672 515195
